Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and scrapbook documenting the events which led to the duel near Bishopville, S.C., between Kershaw planter Ellerbe Boggan Crawford Cash (1823-1888) and prominent lawyer William McCreight Shannon (1822-1880), in which Shannon was killed. Also contains materials documenting earlier duels involving these Cash and Shannon families; information re South Carolina politics in the 1880s; protocol and etiquette associated with dueling, and popular reaction against the practice. Contains "Articles of Agreement," 1878, for a duel between William Boggan Cash and S.M. Williams, with an amendment to govern a second duel between Cash and James Cantey; letters, 12 July 1880, and 25 Aug. 1880, reviewing the Cash-Shannon duel, 5 July, at Dubois's Bridge, Darlington County, and including information re 1879 duel between Charles J. Shannon and T. H. Clarke; letter, 18 June 1880, Laurens, Richard C. Watts, criticizing the Camden and Kershaw Anti-Dueling Association; and eight letters, chiefly 1964-1965, B. M. Ellison, Jr., re his interest in duelling and research for his undated typescript, "The Last Affair of Honor". Also includes letter, 25 Aug. 1880, giving character assessments of T.H. Clarke, James Chestnut, and others, and predicting the political decline of the "the Chestnuts, Mannings, Boykins," owing to their unpopularity; letter, 13 Oct. 1880, reporting activities of Lovick William Rochelle Blair, gubernatorial candidate for the Greenback party; letter, 21 Nov. 1880, noting Blair's quarrel with Gen. Kennedy. Areas represented include Camden, Cash's Depot, and Kershaw County, S.C.
